about

"Is anybody out there... listening to what I'm trying to share?"

If you think you are seeing a trend, I think you are on the right track.

This project was not like The Jungle or The Whole World's Watching in that, with both of those projects, I had a basic idea of where I wanted to go with the album as far as concept or theme. For a big part of the summer, I wasn't sure if this project would ever wind up with that theme. I definitely think it did though.

Thing is... I don't really know how to approach a further explanation so, I think I am going to just talk about Side Effect a bit here.

Side has been a constant in the Philly Indie HipHop scene for a MINUTE. I first heard him on one of Reef the Lost Cauze's mixtapes; a remix for a song called "Ohh Wee" which was produced by EyeGo Direct. I was sold right then and there. I would find out later that the song was just the tip of the iceberg.

Over the last ten years, Side has worked with Happ G and Karma Response Unit; Stress The Whiteboy and Krush Unit; Philly producer Cimer Amor; German production powerhouses The Snowgoons; and just about every indie Philly emcee I can think of.

Ten years. That is almost the same amount of time that Dumhi has existed.

Maybe thats why I relate to so many of his lyrics.

When putting these projects together, I listen to these songs A LOT. Like.. a LOT. And Side Effect is a poet. There were so many times I would be listening feeling like Side was actually speaking for me.

Sometimes I would think, maybe Side is describing the passion of indie artists in general. Telling 1st person stories that represent feelings that all of us 'pushing art' feel daily.

Or maybe it's that Side is telling stories and providing a window into HIS life, HIS passion, and HIS experiences. And maybe he just does such a good job of expressing that passion that anyone who is AS passionate will have no option but to relate to his words.

And with that, this Ep has a 'theme'. This Ep is about making music.

Ups.
Downs.
Successes.
Bitter moments.
Struggles.
Triumphs.
Motivations.

Experiences.

And at the same time, it's all about Side Effect.
